Process

The surgery is performed laparoscopically, similar to sleeve gastrectomy surgery. First, a small stomach pocket of approximately 50-70 cc is created from the initial part of the stomach, the cardia region, and separated from the main stomach using staples.

Next, anastomosis is performed by joining the pocket 60-100 cm ahead of the small intestine. Finally, the end of the small intestine, which brings remaining secretions from the stomach and duodenum, is joined to the main intestinal system. The remaining stomach, excluding the pouch-pocket, is not removed.

 

The average operation time is 1.5 hours.

The second phase, which lasts from Day 9 to Day 22, is the puree period and expands the patient’s diet to include eggs, cheese, low-sugar fruit, vegetable purees with yogurt or minced meat, and protein-enriched dairy products.

 

The third phase begins on Day 23 and involves the adoption of a standard and healthy nutrition model specially designed by a dietitian. This diet includes all food groups specific to a healthy diet and is based on the patient’s avoidance of fast food, acidic drinks, alcohol, and sugary foods. This stage is important in terms of developing healthy eating habits and making them a lifestyle.

 

Lifelong follow-up with a dietitian is critical to ensure that patients with RNY gastric bypass do not have protein, vitamin, and mineral deficits. It is recommended that patients visit a dietitian every three weeks for check-ups to maintain a healthy diet and prevent obesity.
